Erasmian fans of the reconstructed keep saying ἡμεῖς (we) and ὑμεῖς (you) both sounding like /imis/ proves historical Greek pronunciation is "broken." They're wrong.

The distinction isn't lost — and Plato already documented it 2,400 years ago.

Greek pronunciation thread 🧵 (with receipts)Image We don't need 16th-century Europeans to tell us how our own vowels work.

Living Greek dialects still preserve the υ sounds the Erasmians claim were "authentic Attic":

Megarian: υ = [u] (back rounded) — κρούσταλλο [krústalo] = crystal

Pontic: υ = [y] (front rounded) — νύφε [nýfe] = bride

Cappadocian: υ = [y] (front rounded) — σκυλιού [scyˈʎy] = of the dog

Standard: υ = [i] — ύπνος [ípnos] = sleep

🇬🇷 The Hellenic Revolution(Elliniki Epanastasi) marked officially on March 25, 1821, symbolizes the widespread national reawakening of the Greek people.

Various regions raised their banners for the cause on different dates—for example, Ypsilantis crossed the Prut River on February 22, the Maniots took up their arms again on March 17, while others across Sterea Ellada, Macedonia, Crete, the islands & Asia Minor followed at varying times—so March 25 has been taken as a compromise to unify these diverse timings under one significant day, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.Image The Revolution sought to overthrow the Ottoman Sultanate in 1821, this would be the 124th time Greek rebels would take up arms against their tyrrants.

Certain regions like Mani had remained fiercely independent, rural & martial subsiding with piracy on the side & proved difficult nuts to crack.

Others like prosperous Chios were autonomous while the 7 Islands were European.

The Peloponnesian hinterland had become a war ravaged wasteland by previous revolutionary attempts though trade in Monemvasia, Nafplion, Tripoli remained active while most of the rest had been a theater of war for many decades and centuries prior, with the Maniots siding with Russians, French, Spanish, Venetian & Genovese in the hope of recovering their country.

At the time 90% of all the Greek villages in the Peloponnese were up in the mountains and the roads were controlled by bandits. The same bandits that would later form the backbone of the Revolutionary Army.Image

British Perfidy in Greece: A Story(or 2) Worth Remembering 🧵

On Dec 3, 1944, British troops opened fire on their Greek allies in Athens, killing 28 civilians, mostly women & children while they were holding British Flags and chanting "Viva Churchill, Viva Roosevelt, Viva Stalin".

But this was only the beginning of Britain's betrayal of Greece. Let's dive in 👇Image By October 12, 1944, the Greek Resistance had liberated their own country. The Germans had withdrawn. Nazi Germany officially surrendered almost a year later in September 1945.

People flooded the streets of Athens shouting: “Freedom! Power to the People!” Image
