This is funny but it’s also useful. Useful in revealing how seriously fucking stupid this country’s politics are. Hey kids some day you can grow up and be a legislator and a nontrivial part of your job will be shit posting to drum up likes and shares how cool is that you can own the idiots with your wicked photoshop skills whos excited?!

One of the things I wonder is: what is the relationship to change and claim accuracy? If something *seems* bad - and by all accounts CC is happening to bad ends - and ppl are bad at nuance - CC ⬆️ but resilience⬆️ too - then how valuable is precision when describin threat? 1/ Obviously good scientists desire and demand accuracy. It’s laudable and cornerstone of endeavor. But wrt sci-comm I wonder whether nuance is inversely related to urgency! Idk people have low trust and maybe lack of precision makes it worse but if trust is already low…2/

Ding ding ding Yglesias is a condescending shit (stop taking in good faith!), but he also misreads the combative view of leftists on climate: it’s not an existential or philosophic disagreement. Climate change is acute crisis; the species will drive itself into extinction w/o aggressive action.

do your damn job, congress. you've got a pandemic still ravaging states and a climate crisis bearing down to destroy the human race and yall are just absolutely worthless which is like exhibit A for why were screwed. no amount of individual action can stop these probs. whats the point of democracy if democracy produces suboptimal outcomes that lead to mass death

a paper with @njwfish using network analysis on panel data to explore how "ideology" shifts over time among different groups of people.

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11… we benefited from the input of colleagues, very patient reviewers, and an @AJPS_Editor editorial team that was very clear about how to give the manuscript its best shot. publishing is a lottery at some threshold, and seeing this in first view feels like holding a winning ticket.

The fact that only like 50% of professional golfers are vaccinated (per a PGA estimate) speaks volumes about the political leanings of that sport. Like the protocol for vaccinated players is so much more generous. Seriously, unless you’ve got some medical exemption keeping you from the vaccine - you’re an idiot for not getting the jab.

Well we know which side of history this puts @Sen_JoeManchin on prior to 1965. Not that “side of history” ever shames people into pro-democracy behaviors but it’s at least good to see clearly how stupid people are.

At what point and I mean this seriously do we describe federalism as not only a hotbed for competitive authoritarianism but a framework that yields failed States? I’m aghast that anyone would say “well it’s a once in a generation event” as if that absolves government from being responsible for insuring against disaster.

The funny part about alternatives is that if you pitch them then people will ask about them, and now every damn reporter working on the education beat should hound his ass about what that funding looks like and when it’s coming. Jubilee for the rich but not for thee.

the 2008 fin crash was complicated bc the entire system had hands dirty. any time issue is complex and there is no live easy villain, accountability is hard. but #gme is simpler: evil hedge fund overleverages, td-ameritrade and robinhood manipulate market. shooo strap in yall. like lmao have you ever watched the big short w other ppl? its just not a straightforward story. short-selling, naked calls are complex, sure, but the over-arching (artificial!) narrative here is not difficult to grasp. i suspect that means someone gonna get done dirty.

we'll get a solid day of the images of war-torn *checks notes* washington DC , and then the media apparatus will move on bc it is historically illiterate and refuses to contextualize current events against the long arc of this nation's shitty white nationalism. it is patently inexcusable for democratic leadership to assume that things will quiet down over the next two weeks. we'll see how today plays out, but the desperate desire to "turn the page" is exactly the impulse that allows this shit to fester and repeat.

i was ambivalent about latex until i had to try and get it to compile inside a journal's system and now i would like to chuck it off a cliff. "maybe this time it'll work!"

Stata-user friends: plz make prettier graphs in 2019. I wrote up a little guide with reproducible syntax. You just need to plug-and-play, ok? Sharing is caring.

Disclaimer: I wrote most of this on a plane so plz forgive typos.
