I volunteer a few times a week at NSCChurch which primarily serves the homeless & or addicted / formerly addicted population of Brooklyn, New York.
The desk I work at helps people get government funded phone service, emails, food stamps, social security, rehab, housing, etc.
Each of the individuals that come in let us into their lives as we problem solve together.
“I keep trying to get a phone but they say I don’t qualify even though I meet the requirements.”
“I know I have $x amount of food stamps a month but it’s saying I have $0.”
If you are someone who grew up in a dysfunctional household in one way or another, I cannot recommend highly enough finding some way to regularly spend time with another healthy family with adults a generation older than you
ideally they have children who are also around, ideally you are really seeing this family in real action
maybe finding a way to serve them / do something they need doing, coming over to help them with a reoccuring chore while chatting, etc
