This is the story of a market distortion in cargo handling in ports. A distortion created by a government measure - the tonnage tax - and facilitated by the European Commission. We wrote about it in our recent report: itf-oecd.org/sites/default/… What is a tonnage tax? In essence a tailor-made tax regime for the shipping sector that gives the sector a much lower tax burden than economic sectors that pay corporate income tax.
