In other news, an update on the situation at Brooklyn Friends School: The union will strike on Monday, and in an email to parents, head of school Crissy Cáceres says that BFS "has thoughtfully contracted with a number of teachers who have been hired in anticipation of the strike" So to recap: A progressive Brooklyn school is still trying to bust its union, and has now hired scab workers

I *also* wrote about Aaron Coleman. It was very difficult to do as a lady writer who goes off 'intuition' and her 'gut,' as Ryan Grim recently said of me, but I think I did ok thecut.com/2020/08/why-we… one of the things that really bothered me about the 'debate' over Coleman: do you all really think that left-wing women are new to these questions about restorative justice? that we haven't asked ourselves the same questions about our own attackers over and over again?

dedicating one (1) gray hair to Rep. Mark Walker referring to Louis DeJoy as a "logistics genius" and then following that up with a complaint about "cancel culture" Walker, who is a Southern Baptist minister, voted against the reauthorization of VAWA. Also: rollcall.com/2018/04/30/wal…

people keep talking about New York's low positivity rate for COVID-19 tests, but there are other factors to consider when we're talking about reopening public schools nymag.com/intelligencer/… I don't see how the city is going to get enough PPE to schools, and perform all necessary infrastructure repairs, with less than a month to go

I wrote about the bad Atlantic piece because I think it debuts arguments we're going to be dealing with for a while nymag.com/intelligencer/… this is not a comprehensive rebuttal because I am only one woman and there was almost too much to address, but I have done my best

I was homeschooled for eight years. It (obviously) didn't ruin my life, but I don't think it works for most kids, and the homeschooling movement itself is a minefield that pandemic-burdened parents should beware: nymag.com/intelligencer/… My mom invested a lot of time and effort into homeschooling! You can read my old interview with her here: nymag.com/intelligencer/… I also had a learning disability with math that got completely missed, and I wish I'd had proper intervention when it would've made a difference

it's interesting to watch liberals tee up over school reopenings; feels like many of them are dancing around what they actually believe, which is that schools should reopen even if it puts teachers at risk you can say you're just thinking of the poor essential workers but...I don't believe you, and who appointed you all their representatives anyway

(certain) people complain about liberal college campuses as if conservative Christians don't have their own, even more exclusionary system of higher education my school would not even accept Catholics! it later shut down its philosophy program when it concluded that the professors were politically left of center

I for one think the unedited version of Race Science Weekly will be even worse without any editors to keep it in check, but perhaps I am a simpleton I also think that if you can publish racism for years and still have your return to 'independent blogging' hailed as a positive sign for the Discourse, you are in fact mainstream, despite all your claims to the contrary

Teachers want to go back to school. In rural and low-income communities especially, they know their kids are falling behind. But they don't want to die, either nymag.com/intelligencer/… It's outside the scope of my piece, but I think it's important to remember that lawmakers have already kind of forced this choice on teachers by refusing to pass serious gun control legislation

My grandfather’s supplemental insurance won’t continue to pay for his case, so he’s getting kicked out of his rehabilitation facility on Monday despite the fact he has a UTI and a non-COVID respiratory infection and can barely sit up. God bless America that should be ‘care,’ not case, but I’m too angry and tired to type it all out again

this is an odd way to frame my argument

nytimes.com/2020/06/16/opi… Image entirely possible that I'm reading too much into things, but the framing seems to imply that I am somehow not happy about the ruling, or that I think it's meaningless
