Last year, we were excited to see the NFT ecosystem evolve as a new group of “power” collectors sought speed, sophisticated features, and bulk buying and selling from their marketplaces. We acquired Gem, the leading NFT aggregator, early 2022 in order to meet this moment.

On Thursday, April 13, we’ll be on the field with @webthreefc in an all-star soccer match against some of the most notable web3 projects.

We’re making some big changes today:
1) OpenSea fee → 0% for a limited time
2) Moving to optional creator earnings (0.5% min) for all collections without on-chain enforcement (old & new)
3) Marketplaces with the same policies will not be blocked by the operator filter 2/ Context: There’s been a massive shift in the NFT ecosystem.

In October, we started to see meaningful volume and users move to NFT marketplaces that don’t fully enforce creator earnings.

Today, that shift has accelerated dramatically despite our best efforts.

A lot of you have been asking why we keep calling "royalties" "creator fees." The answer is honestly a little boring, but we wanted to address it! 🧵⬇️ 2/ Basically, the word “royalties” has specific--but differing--meanings in various contexts and the term isn’t even applicable to all types of NFTs.

1/ After hearing the passionate voices from the creator community last week, we believe marketplaces should honor a creator’s choice to set fees on existing collections, not just new ones. Thread 👇 2/ Last week we launched a marketplace filter that collections can use to protect creator fees across the NFT ecosystem. As a reminder, this tool is a v1 and is intended to give creators the choice to protect their business model by blocking royalty-evading transactions.

UPDATE: We will continue to enforce creator fees on all existing collections.
🧵⬇️ 2/ When we began seeking guidance from our community, it was to understand a range of perspectives (from creators, collectors, and builders in this space) that would help us make sense of trends and behaviors we were observing.

There’s been a lot of discussion over the past few months about business models for NFT creators & whether creator fees (“royalties”) are viable.

Given our role in the ecosystem, we want to take a thoughtful, principled approach to this topic & to lead w/ solutions. 🧵 2/ It’s clear that many creators want the ability to enforce fees on-chain & we believe that choice should be theirs–not a marketplace’s–to make.

So we’re building tools we hope will balance the scales by putting more power in creators’ hands to control their business model.
