This is one of those times I think I should tweet in Korean until I realize EVERYONE who was in a major Korean university in the late eighties knows this: It would be surprising if Lee In-young wasn't what we later called "jusapa" and one of the more pro-North ppl you knew+ & per Thae's Q, at the time it would not have been particularly surprising if Lee had pledged allegiance to Kim Il-sung, in a ritual, together with others. And it's not the kind of thing anyone would have a hard time remembering. That's why he said he's "no memory" of doing so.+

Tread re Sanomaeng.
I've got to admit I'd completely forgotten Cho Kuk was Sanomaeng, the South Korean Socialist Workers League, or whatever the 남한사회주의노동자동맹 called itself in English. (FWIW, ggl those names as I just did and you'll see it's been covered somewhat.)1/9 If there's just one thing to love about Sanomaeng, it's that they were completely anti-DPRK.They called it a dictatorship exploiting NK workers.

Because they were very orthodox socialist! Which by definition means much of leadership was composed of academics and artististes.2/9

THREAD. Some thoughts on how this mess happened.

First, I translated Hankyoreh and Chosun editorials for 4 years each, meaning I've given a very close/thorough read of aprox to 10k Korean editorials.

Looks like two things went wrong here.

@charliebrown78 @SarahHuckabee And what went wrong here has something to do with how Korean editorials are often written and a serious problem with the translation. I'll start with the problem in the translation. For reference here's the original.
