This is something I've been mulling over for a while now, specifically in relation to this blog post by @PatBlanchfield which I've probably read 20 times 🧵carteblanchfield.com/2014/12/11/san… The Sandy Hook shooter tested average for cognitive abilities, but what is consistent in the OCA report & other reports is that he got good marks in high school.

I've wondered if his parents, specifically his mother, would have taken his MH issues more seriously if he hadn't.

I'm reading Michael Sandel's "The Tyranny of Merit" and although I'm enjoying it, one thing I haven't seen it get into is the common but rarely overtly stated "meritocratic" belief that having "merit" entitles you to break rules Tory's defence of Phillips makes me think of this passage from Sandel on the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings.

IMO Kavanaugh wasn't really saying he couldn't be a rapist because he worked hard. Rather, he was saying...how do we put this:

So it looks for all the world like Doug Ford has some money problems and some things he REALLY doesn't want other people to know. And he's in charge of a province with assets that would be a hell of an investment if they just so happened to get privatized.

This is shocking and should scare all Ontarians. I am not a historian or a political scientist, but I've been watching US politics unfold nonstop since 9/11, whether I really wanted to or not. I've been reading about authoritarianism since the days of the Bush II administration.
