One of the topics covered in our Asian American focus groups was how participants viewed their own racial or ethnic identity, such as Hmong, Korean or Bhutanese. Many participants described a complicated relationship with the pan-ethnic labels “Asian” or “Asian American.” 1/ For some, using these was less an active choice and more an imposed one, with participants discussing the lack of available choices often found in formal settings such as on a job application or a school application. 2/ pewresearch.org/race-ethnicity…
