This is how my morning started: dropped-off Z at school, picked up my dad and went fishing along S Fork Tuolumne. Had a plan to be home in time to pick up Z. But fate intervened. For the 2nd time in my life I became the first on scene of a bad wreck. ImageImage CW: Non-fatal serious car wreck discussion to follow. It’s going to help me decompress by talking about my response in the hopes that it may be useful to someone someday and help me learn more if needed. Back in a few after I watch a show w/@Xeno_lith

My goodness it was a lovely Half Dome viewing day along our canal in Turlock. The entire Sierra just looked magnificent, with several peaks in southern Yosemite catching massive light. iPhone can’t do that justice.

1/ The washout of #HWY1 at Rat Creek is really impressive, so I think I'd like to make a thread about things that I notice in pics & videos, then hypothesize on how the large rain event may have triggered this washout. TLDR I think the road was responsible for its own demise. 2/ Let's orient ourselves first. Here's Rat Creek (yellow pin) in comparison to the rest of central California. (This thread will develop slowly as I put info together, so please bear with me)

Events in Portland are causing vivid memories to surface from my time visiting the secret Stasi prison -in the middle of an E Berlin neighborhood- back in 2015. Up until late 1990, Stasi ops drove around in disguised food trucks abducting political prisoners from W Berlin. Once abducted, the political prisoners were subjected to psychological torture, often with family well-being at the crux of attempts to extract information. Here’s one of the prison cells.

Volcano night in my EarthSci class at MJC tonight! This is the best pyroclastic density current (bubble model) that I’ve ever seen in my classes. Just glorious! Here’s a visual guide for how to recreate the bubble model for density currents and more.
1. Fill a round Tupperware container 3/4 full w/ water (can be a variable too if you wanted).
2. In second bowl, add about 2Tbsp dish soap for every cup of water. We want soapy film.

Last week I had the privilege of accompanying 11 @turlockhs WildLink Club students on six day adventure into the backcountry of @YosemiteNPS. Thanks to financial support from @NatureBridge, the trip is entirely free for our students. The following are a few of my fav trip pics! We arrived to Yosemite Valley on Sunday (10/6) morning with multiple hours to kill before meeting up w/ @NatureBridge staff for the week. We decided to explore Mirror “Lake”- a widening of Tenaya Creek. Surprise! All the flow was subsurface so I got to give a hydro lesson💦.

So what did I see on my way from OAK to SNA? As always I used the trusty @flyovergeo to double-check my location.
