The final Cass Report is out today.
I’ll try to give an overview of the main findings
🧵
There’s going to be A LOT of heated discussion about the report online and in the media.
I’m going to try and stay factual and positive 🤗

Image The review was commissioned by NHS England, in response to various issues and concerns about NHS gender identity services for children and young people. The aim was to make evidence-based recommendations about the best ways forward.
The review took a multi-pronged approach.

Having read my #EditLetter, now I #AmEditing 🤩
A new thread…
🧵
1/ First up, while reading through my lovely editor’s letter, I have been making notes on *her* notes as I go.
This week, I also wrote out my own broad-scale to-do list, to summarise for myself the main changes I need to make.
Again, some bits are still a bit fuzzy in my head…

Thank you, Megan. I’m listening with an open mind & will wait to hear the full series before drawing my conclusions.
I was disappointed, though, that (in this episode at least) you repeat @jk_rowling’s severe misrepresentation of Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill as…
1/ …allowing trans people to use a new “self ID” process to “access single-sex services or spaces with no (medical) gatekeeping”.
As JK has been informed *many times*, the UK’s legal gender recognition process (covered by our Gender Recognition Act 2004)…

⭐️The #EditLetter — a 🧵⭐️
So…I’ve just received the letter from my editor for my fourth psychological suspense novel (due out early 2024).

I thought I’d write a thread with a blow by blow account of this part of the writing process, to motivate myself & share some insights!
1/ Image My lovely editor starts off with some enthusiastic praise, using words like “complex“, “intriguing“, “ambitious“, “brimming with potential“ and “set to be your best book yet”.
As a psychologist, I know all about the “shit sandwich“, but trust me, it really does help!

Let's take a step back for a moment and remind ourselves what we are talking about with INTERNAL genres.
INTERNAL genres map *internal character change*.

Good evening, folks! Ready for the next of #PhilippasTutorials?
Of course you are!
Continuing in the LOVE genre ❤️, this one will be all about the MARRIAGE story.
If you've missed previous classes, find them all here:

1/
Just like the COURTSHIP LOVE story, the MARRIAGE story makes a great "sandwich" genre.
A MARRIAGE story can work as a great sub-plot to an EXTERNAL genre (such as THRILLER, SOCIETY or HORROR)
It also binds deeply with INTERNAL GENRES (stories of profound character change).

These ones will be all about #StoryGenre. Use the hashtags to follow along.
Full credit to @storygrid for everything I'll cover here.
Let's dive in!
1/ What I'll specifically be talking about here is STORY GENRE, as opposed to MARKETING genres (which are also important). Clearly knowing your STORY GENRE will massively help you construct, edit and pitch your novel, and ensure it's highly satisfying & entertaining to a reader.

#WritingCommunity #PhilippasTutorials #PhilippasRevisionClass Part 2

....Aaaaand we’re back!

RESOLUTION: Sam ascends into Heaven. NB: When it comes to WANTS vs NEEDS, there are different ways these can be organised in a story.
Sometimes our protagonist gives up what they WANT and shifts to what is NEEDED, and this happens during the “all-is-lost” moment, as for Cher in #Clueless (see prev. clip)

Thank you, everyone, for your votes!
People seem keen to (re)learn everything, so let’s look at this stuff all in one go, using the film #Ghost (again!) and with a full Story Structure analysis of this movie.
#PhilippasTutorials #WritingCommunity
#PhilippasRevisionClass Part 1 GOAL: Sam needs to address whatever unfinished business he still has on Earth (which includes unravelling the mystery of his own death and protecting Molly) so he can ascend to Heaven.

Happy New Year, Everyone! Hope you've had a good one.
Time for another advanced class in #PhilippasTutorials, and what better than a session on WANTS, NEEDS and THEMES? Because this is all about...

ADV 3: Nailing Your GOALS

#WritingCommunity #PhilippasAdvancedTuition We've seen how the INCITING INCIDENT of a story sparks a GOAL in our protagonist. They then navigate a series of PROGRESSIVE COMPLICATIONS until the final CRISIS and CLIMAX, when they ultimately succeed or fail in their quest.

While we've got the momentum behind us, here's the next "advanced class" in #PhilippasTutorials on Story Structure!
ADV 2: The Saggy Middle
I'm covering a lot in this one, so hold on tight!
#PhilippasExtraTuition #WritingCommunity We've seen how the seven essential elements of story apply to both the narrative as a whole AND to individual scenes.
We've discussed how you can control pacing by considering where you place your chapter (or section) breaks.

Hey everyone! Hope you had a lovely Xmas. Time for an advance class on Story Structure!
#PhilippasTutorials #PhilippasExtraTuition #WritingCommunity

Read on... So! We've looked at the seven essential elements that form a story as a whole. But how do we actually construct that full story?
QUESTION: Are novels made up of
a) pages
b) scenes
c) blood, sweat and tears or
d) chapters?
