Story: When I was 20 or 21 I applied successfully for a grant to work ‘pro bono’ at an alternative to incarceration center.

The counselors were glorified probation officers.

The Black and brown kids were expected to be there daily — for GED class, and a lot of surveillance.

🧵 Prison Policy pie chart sho... Class was a joke; nobody paid attention, and the teacher didn’t care, so I taught English using Hip Hop.

The majority of the day, though, the boys watched The Godfather on repeat. Splayed on a floor.

Outside time was one hour. Basketball or nothing. And only I played with them.

Yesterday, ‘progressive’ DA Mike Schmidt said this brutality “was justified”
