44% of public school teachers are now quitting the profession within five years

Why? Well, in addition to having to pay for their own classroom supplies…

4 hedge fund managers make more than 120,000 kindergarten teachers combined

Meanwhile, 8 in 10 teachers in the US are white, even though white students no longer even represent the majority

Health insurance companies are using AI to automate rejections.

This is a *not* good application of #ArtificialInteligence “How algorithms are being used to deny health insurance claims in bulk” (PBS, 04/02/23) An AI bot performed insider trading and then “lied about it”

I spoke with @kamaufranklin, who co-founded @CommunityMvt after years with @MXGMNyc in NYC, about Cop City in Atlanta and what it means for liberation movements in the US and worldwide

“We’ve got to get to a place in our movement where we’re winning some of these struggles, but we can only have that when the lulls happen and we’re not falling apart”

@kamaufranklin on what we can learn from #StopCopCity — even if we *don’t* win

#AndrewJosephIII was a beloved honor roll student and athlete.

February 7, 2014, the 14-year-old Black child was murdered

And police did nothing; he was already their *target*.

For years, the Joseph family has fought for justice — to no avail.

Today, we share their story

🧵 2/7/14 was Students Day at the Florida State Fair in Tampa.

That’s when county sheriffs targeted, harassed, searched, photographed and kidnapped #AndrewJosephIII and 98 other Black children — as young as 8

And abandoned them on the side of a busy interstate, 2 miles away

Ever hear of the School of the Americas (SOA)? It’s at the US military base in Fort Benning, GA.

This American school is where we train South American soldiers to slaughter their own people…

And where we trained Derek Chauvin, who murdered George Floyd

When it comes to police violence and the prison industrial complex, I share a lot of data, smart ideas from people smarter than me, and stories from/of those deserving amplification.

But here’s how I *know* what I say is true 🚨🧵 It was 2005. 2 years before the 1st iPhone.

I was 24, dating a Venezuelan. She was 23. We’d each ‘interacted’ with police before.

We were on our way to Maine, driving north in Massachusetts. I, a working class Jew in a Yankee hat, and she, a poor Latina. We didn’t know the road

Story: When I was 20 or 21 I applied successfully for a grant to work ‘pro bono’ at an alternative to incarceration center.

The counselors were glorified probation officers.

The Black and brown kids were expected to be there daily — for GED class, and a lot of surveillance.

Rachel Herzing says there’s a “symbiotic relationship between public and private interests that employ imprisonment, policing, surveillance, the courts, and their attendant cultural apparatuses as a means of maintaining social, economic, and political inequalities”

🧵 While we cheered Biden saying "the federal government should not use private facilities for any detention”

Within months of taking office there were thousands more people caged than under Trump

He was further privatizing ICE detention and trying to send more people to prison

In 1937, judge Nathan Perlman personally asked Jewish gangster Meyer Lansky to “disrupt” Nazi rallies spreading across NYC.

Lansky accepted all his terms but one: he’d do it pro bono.

“Nazi arms, legs, and ribs were broken, and skulls were cracked”

- historian Robert Rockaway 5 years or so after he started shutting down Nazi events across NYC, Meyer Lansky was approached by an arm of the federal government:

German spies had infiltrated Italian businesses at the docks…

So Lansky had his guys hunting Nazi intelligence agents up and down the shore

Not only are the cops who rape, steal and kill rehired the next town over

The ones who dare question police misconduct are fired, jailed and even hospitalized.

Calling cops the largest, deadliest gang is not hyperbole Image A @USATODAY reporter, @BrettMmurphy ”documented how police departments hunt down and silence internal whistleblowers to cover up misconduct with impunity…”

Almost exactly a year ago, on August 31, 2020, Portland cop Thomas Clark chased down a protester, tackled him, pinned him to the ground, and punched him repeatedly in the face.

Yesterday, ‘progressive’ DA Mike Schmidt said this brutality “was justified”

While the crimes of Portland police are being excused by the DA — despite video evidence of excessive force

The same leniency is not being applied to Portlanders exercising their 1A rights…
