Many people think Brexit will be behind us if WA concluded between UK and EU. U.K. will indeed legally become a third country vis-à-vis the EU but it will in fact remain EU linked during the transition period. What will happen afterwards?/1 Then the time will come to make the most difficult choices. What to do? What will be the future GB relations with EU: on trade on goods,on services, investments, exchange of data, internal security and fight terrorism, foreign policy and external security, research, transports./2

1)Let‘ us assume new British PM succeeds in a Brexit no deal. Afterwards, how long would it take to go back to close, stable and friendly relations between the U.K. and the EU? I would say closer to 15 years than to 10. The only sure bet would be uncertainty for a long period. 2) First, failed negotiation U.K./EU.
Second, postponement of Brexit for a few months asked and obtained from EU. Third, failure to get approval of H of Commons on no deal. Fourth, General Elections. Fifth A, if Tories/Brexit Party wins, no deal and long negotiations with EU

1/ It looks more and more obvious that Tories and Labour leaders first concerns and interests are much more with the survival of their political party than with those of their country and people. They don’t look to care about the negative political and economic effects of this. 2/ These effects are negative for the U.K., but also for the whole EUropean Union. Tories and Labour leaders control both the U.K. Government and Parliament. They both refuse another referendum and continue to talk about the future relations without taking realities into account.

1)THREAD on CM 2. I listened to a Chatham debate on this « CM2». If I understand well, the partisans of the U.K. joining EEA introduce their case by saying U.K. after Brexit will not need to apply to accede EFTA (which has now 4 members: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Swiss). 2)This is because they think that U.K. will « remain » an EEA member after Brexit. This is legally incorrect.
Exit EU goes automatically with exit EEA.

THREAD 1) 33 months after the June 2017 referendum, U.K. continues to negotiate internally on the way it could exit the EU and on possible options for its future relations with the EU.

THREAD. -1) The so called « constitutional treaty » has not been renamed the Lisbon Treaty! While a number of their provisions are the same, their political and historic significance were totally different. -2) The « Constitutional Treaty » would politically have meant a significant step towards more integration and maybe federalism, with its name, flag, motto, anthem and some of its substantive content.

I also agree. If U.K. asks an extension of art 50 to be ended on latest on 30 June 2019, no EP elections in U.K. at the end of May. However, European elections last week May 2019 necessary if extension beyond 1st July 2019.Decision EUCO 19 June 2018 establishing composition EP. Decision 29 June agreed by Eur Parliament and European Council

THREAD answer to @AlasdairMSmith ,@CER_Grant 1) Frictionless trade between different States exist only if and when they share a) a single market SM and b) a customs union CU.

1/ THREAD on Norway as a so called interim solution with the addition of a custom union with the EU @nickboles @pmdfoster @Simon_Nixon @StephenFidler1 @lionelbarber @JenniferMerode 2/ One should not understand the possibility of « a Norway model » for the U.K. as meaning for the U.K. to become a member of the current EFTA -EEA organisations with their present founding treaties.

THREAD 1/ Some comments on Nick Boles’proposal « Norway For Now »#@NickBoles,#@Simon_Nixon, #StephenFidler1, #@pmdfoster 2/This could not be « a new transition », as neither EFTA nor EEA are open to a temporary membership and I doubt their members would accept such a change.

THREAD BREXITBAcKSTOP. 1/ Preserving peace in Ireland requires an absence of controls at borders between NI and Eire. UK and EU accept that. 2/Thus if the system agreed in the WA would be changed in the future, another mechanism will always be needed.

THREAD. 1. EU does not accept Chequers Paper for several reasons 2.It would pick one freedom (goods) and not the three others which are integral part of the Single Market (SM)

BREXIT THREAD. 1)HMG seems to think that the EU is le Père Noël. 2)They say: after the transition period, give us full access to your Single market of goods (para 12).Not on services.
Nothing on free movement of persons.

Thread Brexit: Where are we now? 1/ Things are clearer. U.K. red lines kept the same: no Court of Justice, no Single Market, no Customs Union, no Free Movement of Persons, no payment to EU budget. Get back control on laws, borders, budget. Brexit means Brexit! 2/ But UK is not third country as others of course! Closest partner in trade, economy, research, internal and external security, transports, health... We are ready to generously offer to EU unconditional continuation of close cooperation in all domains for the benefits of us all!

Some comments on Ms May’s speech.
A THREAD 1/ this would have been a « normal » speech one year ago, when triggering art 50 procedure. At this late stage, It looks like showing dangerous irrealism!

Ms May to make « big offers» while these wishes will actually be wishes she has no means to realise:that U.K. continues after Brexit to continue benefiting from arrest warrant and Europol as if it was still an EU member. Impossible. See Denmark for Europol! This is part of a good number of other illusions that, while the U.K. will become a third country vis à vis the EU she could continue to benefit from the advantages of an EU member states: buy a cake, eat it, keep it and keep the money!
