Did you know that in the 1960s, the FBI funded and organized its own series of underground anarchist zines to polemicize against existing Marxist-Leninist states and to disrupt New Left public and educational activisms in the United States?

A very brief thread. Much like the Congress for Cultural Freedom/CIA-funded socialist journals of the 1950s, the FBI zines used hyper-individualist, anti-communist rhetoric and anarchist talking points to disrupt activism and to demonize Vietnam, the Soviet Union, and other targets of US imperialism.

Did you know that the CIA funded socialist journals in the 1950s and 1960s to actively polemicize against existing socialisms and communist-led states?

A brief thread. In response to the Soviet Union’s 1948 World Congress of Intellectuals in Defense of Peace, the CIA founded and funded the Congress for Cultural Freedom—an anti-communist advocacy group which, at its height, operated in 35 countries and published over 20 journals.

Communist study, and our method of scholarship, must be bound up in active revolutionary practice. “If we have a correct theory,” Mao wrote, “but merely prate about it, pigeonhole it and do not put it into practice, then that theory, however good, is of no significance.” This means two things: 1. that our theoretical knowledge must accurately reflect the world as-it-is in practice. An abstract knowledge divorced from reality is fruitless. And 2. that to develop our theoretical understanding of a field of inquiry, we must practice it rigorously.
