There is nothing more disheartening than being the parent of a student who struggles in school.

🧵 When your kid struggles, you realize quickly that no matter what school your child attends, most building policies aren't designed to support struggling learners.

Instead, they are designed to reinforce the status quo.

Simple truth: Because they have less support and structure, It's taking kids about 50 percent longer to finish work while working alone from home than it would if they were doing the same work at school. How do I know?

I asked the 160 eighth graders that I teach in two different surveys during this quarter.

They have a lot of experience with working remotely, y'all.

Listening to a medical expert on CNN this morning. He recommends that we all pay attention to our mental health right now. He pointed out that this is an incredibly stressful time -- and we need to address that. I hear that a lot in conversations about/for educators right now.

We concentrate on "self-care," knowing that our work is harder than it has ever been and that we need to show ourselves some grace as we learn to function in a new reality.

All of that is true and appropriate.

It ain't fancy, but the most important thing that I've done at the start of this school year is have my kids respond to this question privately in Flipgrid. Image Doing so has given them the chance to be recognized and heard and valued from the earliest moments in our classroom -- and that matters times a million during a time when they are working alone in their homes.

Some of you aren't going to like this strand of thought. I've heard from you before. You want me to stick to education in my stream. You think that there's no reason to "turn things political" here. But America is burning, y'all. Think about this week. Stew in it for a few minutes. George Floyd being choked out, begging for his life. Amy Cooper calling 911 because she felt threatened by "an African - American." Our president dropping "thugs" and "when the looting starts, the shooting starts."
