Language models were invented in 1913 by Andrei Markov. His training data was “Eugene Onegin”, and he computed the parameters by hand. His model is now called a Markov chain. Google’s PageRank algorithm is a Markov chain where instead of predicting the next word we predict the next Web page reached by following a random link from the current one.

Half of the female STEM faculty in the US were hired over more qualified men. It's striking how the responses to this are just a torrent of insults, without the slightest attempt to actually refute the claim.
