Last month in California, State Senator Brian Dahle won Orange County against incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom, flipping the country's sixth-largest county Republican for the first time since 2014. Here's a map of the third consecutive narrow gubernatorial election result.
Dahle's coattails (or perhaps, Newsom's ballasts) drew out conservative voters, helping buoy downballot Republican candidates. This is a trend seen thoughout the state, most notably in the Central Valley where Republicans picked up a congressional seat for a 222-seat majority.
