My cab driver yesterday recounted his pandemic experiences after the hastily announced and strictly implemented lockdown in 2020. He said those who criticised migrants for rushing to leave Mumbai and go home to their villages and towns must first consider what they faced here. 1/
He said what we know but don’t acknowledge: construction labourers, factory workers, drivers, people who came to Mumbai in search of employment and did odd jobs to survive—were abandoned by the state, by their employers, and by us. They had nowhere to live, no money, no food. 2/
