During the middle ages, ghosts were thought to be souls suffering for their sins awaiting the final glorification in heaven. As French Medievalist Jean-Claudette Schmidt writes, "medieval ghosts were sinners, petitioning the living to help them join the community of saints." 
First, I think Protestants have to believe that the concept of someone who is close to God being assumed into heaven is biblical. Why? Because there are two examples of it in the bible. First, we find Enoch. This mysterious figure seems like a minor character.
