Hunger played the biggest role in conversion of Mizos to Christianity.

When the 1910-1912 mautam famine struck, desperate tribals were forbidden to cross the ILP to search for food. They begged anyone for some rice for their dying families. Missionaries were ecstatic over this.

Returning soldiers from the WW also helped to spread disease like cholera and influenza that wiped off pagan tribals who did not have access to modern medicine.

Whatever resistance pagans had against Christianity crumbled.

Tirot Singh, the Khasi leader of Nongkhlaw fought against the British for several years to defend Khasi sovereignty.

At this point, Khasis were coming under influence of Hinduism and their leaders had Sanskritised names (Buh Singh, Singh Manick, Konrai Singh, Duwan Singh) There was a grand alliance of Hindu and animist tribals in the region against the British.

Tirot Singh was taken captive and died in Dhaka. With him out of their way, the British began taxing Khasis exorbitantly.

19th century Bengal was a cauldron of communal tension. Both Hindus and Muslims despised one another to such an extent that violence would break out frequently.

Initially, this clash was only between the elites. Rural Muslims of Bengal were not even properly Islamized back then. Rural Muslims would visit Hindu temples, pray to Hindu deities and kept names that can easily pass off as Hindu.

You could find Muslim women with names like Kali, Lakshmi, Chandi and Katyayani around the early 19th century before the Faraizi movement took hold.

Cold Drink History in India.

This story dates back to the era of"License raaj" when Indira Gandhi had forced all foreign companies to put a significant share of their venture in domestic hands.

Coca Cola pulled out and Thumbs Up took over the market. When the liberalisation of India happened under PVN Rao, foreign companies returned. Coca Cola woule face stiff competition from Thumbs Up.

So, it relied on shady techniques like incentivising shops not to sell Thumbs Up. Companies that supplied bottles were also discouraged.

You'll be surprised to learn of the shit that goes on in this state.

You have elite private schools that follow the incompetent state board yet charge ₹2k/month while a regular one will charge ₹700.

They start teaching 10th's course from mid sem of 9th itself. They don't follow CBSE because they consider it to backward. For them, speaking chaste English is the biggest priority, doesn't matter if the content is gutter shit.

Speaking in any other language but English carries fine in these schools.

Wangala (lit 100 Drums Festival) dance at Asanang, Garo Hills.

The festival is of animistic origin as a sign of gratitude to the Sun god Misi Saljong and rice goddess Minima Riri Rokime.

Songsarek priests (kamal) invoke the deities at the nokma's house.

Garos believe that Misi Saljong (also called Pattigipa Ra'rongipa) gave them seeds of millet and paddy which is vital for their sustenance.

Agalmaka is the sowing festival of the crop while Wangala (Wanna Rongchuwa) is the harvest festival.

Image: Phoolpati ritual of the Gorkhas in Shillong.

Durga Puja was introduced in Shillong by Gorkha Regiment in 1872 through a ghot (earthen pot)

By 1942, they had also adopted the custom of worshipping the deity with idol alongside. In 1896, the first idol of the goddess was imported in from Krishnanagar, Bengal with a priest from Sylhet for public participation in the event.

The idol was brought to Guwahati through trains, ferries and then further to Shillong through a bullock cart.
