In '96, fresh into our democracy, folks like Mahmood Mamdani came here to help shape the textual narratives of this place. For Mamdani, UCT was the terrain of contestation. There was fierce resistance, culminating in what came to be known as the Mamdani Affair 1996: UCT post-apartheid. Centre for African Studies (CAS) was reckoning with the times. Enter Mahmood Mamdani - radical scholar, appointed as Director. His mandate? Dismantle Eurocentric frames. First move: redesign "Intro to Africa". Not just a course - a wholescale reframing.
