Over the last several months, I’ve been investigating Pakistani influence operations targeting India on social media.

How does Pakistan interfere with India? What are its aims? Which user groups are targeted?

A first of its kind, data-driven study on Pakistani interference 🧵 First - It's important to define what a Pakistani influence op is, and what does it entail?

To do this, I analyzed >6,000 articles from the Pakistani Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)’s Hilal magazine as a framework to understand Pakistani strategy.

As a lead author & researcher on the Leicester report released by @ncri_io, I’d like to set the record straight after a @business headline has been picked up and circulated prolifically by other outlets. It’s a distortion of our report & findings. The headline imposed by @business editors is severely editorial and not rooted in the data presented in our research. This is important since a large majority of news consumers read only the headline of news stories:

Since the violence in Leicester broke out, our team @ncri_io investigated.

From malicious narratives, to bot activity, cyberswarming, ethnic hatred - how did online activities spill over into real world violence, vandalism, mob mobilization, & intimidation?

A thread: The first viral video tweet (305k+ views) of Indian cricket fans chanting “Death to Pakistan” & clashing was circulated on Aug 29 by [deleted] @tragicbud. The narrative tied violence, which sometimes accompanies cricket matches, to “Hindutva” nationalist objectives. Image
