I am seeing different views on the best advice for students concerning grad school/academia. I hope to make clear is I try to help students map out their options and identify tradeoffs they might miss, but I never tell them straight up no or yes. It is THEIR decision to make. /1 There are reasons why I don't give them a yes/no answer or tell them what major to pursue, and it has nothing to do with not wanting to give unpleasant information. As I said, everyone has different life circumstances. /2

Students often ask me about graduate school, a career in academia, and how long they should be in the market before pursuing alternative career paths. The answer I give them is that it really depends on your life circumstances. /1 We all have different risks tolerances, life goals, and resources; there is no one-size-fits-all rule and if you're going to spend 5-7 years of your life in grad school, you need to be an adult and figure this out for yourself. /2

I receive emails (and physical letters) a few times a year over the Sea of Japan naming dispute. This can be a learning moment. /1 The argument that I have found compelling is that the Japanese archipelago gives that body of water its shape. Without Japan, which also has the most extensive coastline that touches that body of water, it would just be part of the Pacific Ocean. /2
