This is an excerpt from an oral history interview I did in 2003 with President Reagan's White House Counsel Peter Wallison. The excerpt concerns the selection of Antonin Scalia for the Supreme Court. As Wallison notes, it was Scalia's Italian "extraction" that led to his selection. President's have always looked to race, ethnicity, religion, etc., in making these selections.
