I wouldn’t want to live there. The critics are right that El Salvador has seen significant and pervasive violations of civil rights.

But there’s two questions to ask. 1. Are those abuses necessary to achieve the goal (safety)?

2. Is the safety, with those abuses, better than what came before it?

In America, I would never agree to Bukele’s methods.

But El Salvador isn’t America.

I know many people disagree with me that the draft is involuntary servitude. I know the Court disagrees with me.

I don’t really care.

I will point out the irony that our first draft was by the North, to fight against the South. So we used involuntary servitude to fight slavery. I do think it is misleading to call the draft “slavery.” Slavery, in the U.S., is a much worse form of involuntary servitude. But the 13th Amendment does not merely ban slavery, but *any* involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.
