My Chief of Staff @Stephen_Dolan is ludicrously good at practicing Getting Things Done with OmniFocus.

So far, I've learned four really useful things from his coaching: 1. Only promote your best Inbox items into projects.

Just because you thought you might want to do something at one point doesn't mean you should actually commit to it.

Not feeling an idea when you process your Inbox? Trash it without guilt.

Hard for this Vim-using, keyboard-mashing hiring manager to love this more.

The "how do we make the team we already have more awesome?" space feels under-explored. See also Stripe's Developer Productivity group, discussed with @penelope_zone.

Most commit messages are next to useless because they focus on WHAT was done instead of WHY.

This is exactly the wrong thing to focus on.

You can always reconstruct what changes a commit contains, but it's near impossible to unearth the reason it was done.

(thread) Think about the last time you `git blame`d something.

You were almost certainly thinking "WHY is this like this?", not "What is a one-line summary of what happened in this commit?".

It's near the end of the year, so I've been doing some reflecting on the habits that have had the biggest impact on my career so far: 1. Accomplishing deep work.

It is SO easy to go an entire day without getting into the zone, and that's death for real productivity. Getting serious about guarding my attention was a turning point.
