So, courtesy of open house Melbourne, I have finally managed to take a look at the under construction Anzac station on Melbourne Metro Tunnel. It's due to open sometime later this year and construction is now complete. My thoughts? Well this is a thread for you. An large oval shaped canopy forming one entrance to an under construction underground station and a tram interchange stands in the middle of a major road on a wet day. Open house Melbourne is offering public tours today for a fee of $7 or something (I forget how much). A tour every 15 minutes, and they're FULL. We assemble at the western entrance on the Albert Park side. Open house Melbourne is offering public tours today for a fee of $7 or something (I forget how much). Queensland Rail's new timetable for long distance passenger trains starts July 17th, and there are a few interesting changes.
First the good: The Brisbane to Cairns Spirit of Queensland is resuming 5 days per week after having run only 4 days per week for far too long. (1 of 9) The SoQ's running times are the same, but they have been shifted slightly – Northbound, instead of 3:45pm out of Brisbane and 4:30pm next day into Cairns, it’s now 1:45pm out of Brisbane and 2:30pm next day into Cairns with Tuesday being the additional day run. Today’s all about Melbourne, so what better than a thread about the most quintessential Melbourne thing. No, not picking a football team or deciding on a type of coffee, I’m talking about how Melbourne’s trams got their class designations. 1/19 Of course this is something all Melbournians know from birth, but whilst the W class is world famous, what about all those other types? Many also know about the Z class and the brand new E class, but why are they called that? Well, read on dear reader. 2/19

@danielbowen This inspired me to do a quick analysis of the relationship between Melbourne Metro station names and the names of the formal geographic localities in which they are situated. There are 221 stations situated in 152 different localities.
(1 of 5) @danielbowen Of those stations, 133 are named for their locality, 16 for a variant of the correct locality (North, South etc), 68 have a name unrelated to the locality and 4 (North Melbourne, Keilor Plains, Toorak and Burwood) are named for the WRONG locality or a variant thereof

Today’s historic pic: carriages from The Overland after their overnight journey from Melbourne sit at Adelaide Keswick Terminal, April 9 1985. The Overland has connected Melbourne and Adelaide since 1887, making it one of the world’s longest established trains.
#SaveTheOverland The Overland has connected Melbourne and Adelaide since 1887. Initially named The Intercolonial Express it was renamed The Overland in 1926. It's not clear why that name was adopted, but it first appeared under SAR Commissioner Webb formerly of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.
