hate to say it, but this is kinda bullshit. github shouldn't be reverting software or restricting access because someone decided they didn't want people using their code anymore. i know there's a lot of people that are pissed about this, and so much software that is broken, but there's a lot of other solutions. kinda admire anyone that has the guts to do this when knowing full well how much blowback there would be.

hey, devops/sysops/anyops/cloudeng people

how many of you would be comfortable putting go on a resume? i'm curious. it seems rare. (by this, i mean, how many of you are good at go)

Reason #719373 that I can’t sleep: it’s 3:30 am and I’m getting anxious because I don’t have enough pianos. Ok. Thanks, brain. I don’t need an upstairs piano and a downstairs piano. Chill. I just always want to be a room where I can practice and I can’t optimize this >.< Everyone knows you can’t practice 40 hours a day unless you have a piano in every room, that’s just math.

i'm sharing the set questions i often use to interview people for devops/automation/sysadmin jobs.

i don't ask trivia. i don't give homework.

anything i need to know about someone, i can find out by asking these questions and followup questions based on their answers. i'm sharing this knowing that a lot of tech bros might show up and tell me that this is bad. i don't care about their opinions. if they can't get the measure of someone's experience from these questions, they shouldn't be interviewing people.

Still a bit more to do (and need to redo a few of those labels) but pleased with how it’s turning out so far. ImageImageImage I wanted something that would be really easy to maintain, and where I could find things (and put them away) quickly, with a high degree of visibility for everything. I’d rather have shelves, but this works for now. Craft/tool area is undergoing similar efforts.

this. pandemic was terrible but suddenly it's like i'm living in a world where i could just exist without feeling like i had to keep apologizing for not being neurotypical. because of this, i felt like i could pursue more creative interests. painting, music, building furniture. creating space from the tech community and just being happier in general. life is more than just working in tech.

you know when heating pads have a warning "don't lay on me" but you think to yourself eh, it's not that hot, so you lay on it and everything is fine so you think lmao warnings are for idiots

yeah, you're the idiot in this situation. and by you, i mean me. i'm just putting this out there as a warning to other people.

i used to be in chronic pain in my 20s, and the only way i could sleep was with heat to relax the muscles in my lower back.

i leave twitter for a day or so to physically recover from the hell i put my body through this past weekend, and i come back to see so many additions to my upcoming coffee table book, "beardo fuckwits i refuse to work with" i would like to thank basecamp for their contribution to my upcoming book because of all the threads with rando beardo fuckwits replying that they think basecamp made a good decision.

The #1 tech skill you can have is walking out of interviews like this because you know they aren't down with the neurodiverse crowd. Find an employer and a team that embraces diversity. Interviews like this are a HUGE warning sign. I've been a technical evangelist. I've also been a developer and syseng for much, much longer. It took *decades* to accept that I have ADHD and even medicated can not perform technical tasks well in front of people on command like a golden retriever.

I installed a bunch of music apps and some of them have started trolling me with notifications for real tho, some of these are super useful. This one had an Apple Watch companion app that I just did flash card drills on for half an hour while watching a movie and now I can answer notes for the treble clef immediately so that’s cool.

adhd folks - help me do some science.

something i found with helping to bring things into focus and to slow myself down was to try exercises that took a lot of concentration but they had to involve hand eye coordination. for a long time, that was osu. that's why i loved it. that's why i played it so, so much. but i'd to know if other people have this same thing happen to them, and i found something that's a bit more accessible.

be careful in portland this weekend. bringing in OR state police means the CS gas ban will be ignored. that was only imposed on pdx cops. many may have only heard of portland protests recently, but there's a lot of history, especially when it comes to white supremacist groups causing trouble. opb.org/article/2020/0…

we need to get @tedwheeler out of office. he's a spineless coward that does more harm than good.

i'm excited.

a new thing for me to hack. GENTLY. NOT BREAKING THE WARRANTY.

specifically, i think i can tie the notification system into my home automation. Image i wasn't sure if it would be a good fit, but the kind of email responses i got from @herohealth convinced me. not cookie-cutter copy and paste, but actually understanding what i was asking for, and telling me if they didn't have it & why is huge.

hey. tech industry workers. i'm super curious about something. answer a few questions for me.

if you're in a major city, are you WFH? if you're working from home in a major city - especially more expensive cities - have you thought about moving to somewhere cheaper? (if answer isn't one of these, just respond with it)

when i start out my day by getting into a heated argument with an imaginary opponent in my shower, i know the smart thing to do would be to crawl back in bed and go back to sleep. i started out mad at teams then moved to being mad at systemd now i'm just mad at whoever decided to market linux as an enterprise operating system but also definitely STILL MAD AT TEAMS.

Oh wow. I covered the backs of 2 window fans with paper towels and sat them on a table in my living room. This is what happened. (Previous dips were from opening the bedroom door to allow some ventilation for a bit) Image it's still dropping, but VERY slowly. but considering it's been sitting between 300-400, this isn't bad. i found some website the other day where it talked about effectiveness of materials for filtering pm2.5 - paper towels were only about 30-40% but better than nothing.
