Lan Wangji wakes as he is jostled down into a hard, uncomfortable box. He blinks, trying to clear the grit from his eyes, but his vision remains fuzzy. His chest heaves, and his skin burns.
He cannot breathe. He can hardly turn his head, let alone move his arms. His mind fills with screams of agony, with the memory of blood in the water.
He wishes he had not woken.
His fin scrapes dry, rocky dirt.
