so after a lot of DM ing etc, a job description for which you can make good money in Bangalore (1/n) we have raised money/found some traction, and founders no longer want to code, so we hired some dumb managers who've added crazy processes (hello OKR), some devs with not much experience,. and have a very ugly code base. (2/n)

Many people I know take up Yoga, Tai Chi or other disciplines to get relief from diseases/conditions that can't be addressed through mainstream means.

So far so good.

But most people don't put in enough practice in these disciplines to gain (or disprove) the purported benefits Instead it becomes something to *talk about* in social media, parties etc. Similar is the case with people taking up mindfulness/meditation etc practice.

Talk about it, tweet about it, write on FB, don't do enough *practice*.

First practice, then communication!

In an attempt to teach "socratically" (Goldratt's book) "The Goal" conceals the *method* of solving problems with ToC. You are supposed (like the hero) to work it out from examples, said intellectual effort being supposedly "good for you" Better would be a standard textbook approach. here is one problem. Here is how we solve it. Now we generalize the solution method. Here are 20 more examples/exercises-with-solutions.

But, this would need a textbook. You can't write a 'novel' like this. Novels are easier to read.

couple with a piece of dumbass software through which most people (18-44) *have to register* and get 'slots', over which each hospital layers its own physical token system, and mandatory aadhar etc registration, it is a huge stinking mess. Instead of having a system that is as *simple* as possible, - *have enough supply for the population first*, then register for *free* vaccine doses, *or* walk in anywhere, get a paper card with doses and dates marked off, you have this crazy rube goldberg machine

The 'trick' to working with Goldratt's Theory of Constraints is to realize that it is essentially a system of deductive first order logic, + a sprinkling of Operational Research concepts, presented as a series of metaphors and tree structured diagramming tools. If you have some experience with deriving long chains of deductive logic, proving things, finding holes in deductive arguments etc etc, you can see through the presentation (cheesy stories, various kinds of trees) to its inner structure.

and then you are good to go.

Just realized that most sw folks who quote Goldratt's Theory Of Constraints principles (starting with "the Goal") don't know wtf they are talking about. Goldratt uses a manufacturing line as an example, so these 'thought leaders' look for a 'line' in their companies, latch on to requirements --> code --> test as a 'flow line' and then look for 'constraints' , use 'kanban boards' and so on

For everyone DMing/mailing to ask how I am (wow! I have so many friends, thank you ! Been answering email, phone calls, DMs for hours now)

a) I'm good. Not stepping out of the apartment as much as I can avoid it. b) *if* I do get infected, I'm probably dead in a matter of hours/days, since I have a slightly overactive immune system, but

c) this hasn't happened yet, and hopefully won't! Will keep you posted of any potential departure to higher planes ;-)

A repeated pattern I see:

Mastery of X (where X is an area of study- say CS or Philosophy or whatever, or a skill, say a musical instrument, or calligraphy or sport, will *massively* enhance the quality your life BUT ( - for that quantum enhancement to kick in, you *first* have to put in a certain amount of work (say 3-5 years of 3-4 hours a day), till the positive effects kick in (again think of learning a musical instrument to an expert level)
