In his state budget proposal today, Gov. Cuomo says education spending would be cut by $2 billion if the New York receives $6 billion in new federal aid under Biden's proposed COVID relief package. If the state gets $15 billion, there would be a $3.8 billion increase in ed $$.

OK, stick with me. @BrianLehrer asked the mayor if he'd requested a waiver from the state allowing city schools to hold less than 180 days of instruction (districts get financially penalized for doing this). De Blasio did not answer that question, and instead...
said they reached out to the state education department because "we have a lot of kids who are going to be all remote...We need to know we're going to be held harmless in terms of law and funding if a lot of our kids are remote" or if they have to go all remote at some point.

Many parents, elected officials, and educators are expected to speak in opposition of the DOE's plan to start in-person school on Sept. 10. I haven't specifically heard from folks who are gonna be talking in support of it, but let me know if you're one of those people.

Hello from Jackson Heights, where @AOC, @DianeRavitch and state lawmakers are hosting an education town hall. Waiting for things to kick off here. This crowd is huge. Tough to see but probably at least 150 people here.

There is a massive crowd here at the District 2 CEC meeting, where the DOE will present its proposal on admissions to specialized high schools.
Attendance: well over 300. A couple folks said this is going to get heated — and they used that as the polite term.

At the Newport News City Council work session, things have become interesting about city funding to the school division. Budget Director Lisa Cipriano presented this chart, based on what she says are school figures, since 2008.
Both Cipriano and City Manager Cindy Rohlf said there have been charts presented by school officials and being circulated on social media that misrepresent funding.
