Who was the better general? Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant? It’s a great question to consider in advance of the airing of @History’s “Grant” tonight. #Grant#CivilWar 1/8
The Battle of the Wilderness is a perfect case study for assessing the military skill of the two commanders. It’s the first time they faced each other on the battlefield. And even though Lee was outnumbered, he still possessed talented & experienced senior officers. #Grant 2/8

I’m currently writing a book about the Battle of the Wilderness, which was the first time Robert E. Lee squared off against Ulysses S. Grant. Which of the two Civil War heroes performed better? 1/4
On the plus side, Lee audaciously pinned down Grant’s much larger army in the Wilderness, thereby neutralizing Grant’s advantages. Using the woods effectively and efficiently deploying his veteran troops, Lee suffered relatively fewer casualties than Grant. 2/4
