As I’ve been warning for almost a year, the General Assembly has formally begun gerrymandering Nashville and Davidson County into political oblivion. Under the new map announced today, Nashvillians will be reduced from proud citizens of a capital city to captives inside three colonies run from Clarksville, Cookeville, and Columbia.

(1/4): Tennessee needs to expand Medicaid. The state’s continued refusal is costing LIVES and leaving billions of dollars in federal funds on the table. (2/4): Rejecting Medicaid expansion cost the lives of 964 Tennesseans ages 55-64 from 2014 to 2017.

These people DIED because our state leadership chose politics over people.

The risks are even more pronounced for people of color, who make up 33% of the coverage gap in the TN.

Today I voted “present” in the vote for Speaker of the House, consistent with my eight-year push for new Democratic leadership. Now that we are back in the majority, I did not vote for a rival candidate because there are none. I am very excited about the new Democratic majority. Finally, the Republican monopoly on power in Washington is over. Now, one half of one of the three branches of government will be able to stand up to President Trump when he is wrong.
