This is a picture of the Pangong Tso. Looking from the south bank to the 'Fingers' in the north.
From a tour in July 2016. The bridge the Chinese are building is right (to the south) of here. The Lake is 135 kms long and shaped like a boomerang. The 'boomerang' is concaved vis China/Tibet.
Bit of a surprise that in the specifics, no one has explained terms 'Limit of Patrolling' (LOP) and 'Line of Actual Control' (LAC).
On the Pangong Tso, face-offs were frequent. But the Indian Army at least tried, like this:

Last night in Ladakh shots were fired, for the first time on the India-China frontier in 45 years.

The last time was at Tulung La. It was firing in the fog.

What happened then?

A thread: Tulung La is in Western Arunachal Pradesh at a height of 4726 metres (about 15,500-odd feet). In November 1975 it was patrolled by the 5 Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force that had earlier escorted the Dalai Lama to India when he fled Tibet.

Making sense of the topography in which the clashes between the Indian and Chinese militaries happened on the night of August 29/30. Here goes: The Pangong Tso is a boomerang-shaped lake. Like a wide 'V'. At it's east, often confused with the North because of its lay, are the fingers.

Arguably the most diverse regiment of the Indian Army is the Assam Regiment, drawing recruits from nearly 40 different ethnicities/tribes/communities. You may have heard their song:
At its regimental centre in Shillong, everyone attends Church on Sundays.

AirMarshal PK Barbora (rtd), ex vice chief of the @IAF_MCC.As western air chief he landed in DaulatBegOldi (DBO) in an An32 transporter near the KarakoramPass in Ladakh, 2008, reviving a forward airstrip at the China front disused since 1965.
P.S: He cracks many kinds of jokes. At more than 16,600 feet, DBO is counted among the world's highest airstrips. The Advanced Landing Ground still has to be prepared for landings and take-offs.

Gen @Vedmalik1, India's army chief during the 1999 Kargil war, is succinct in these observations on the India-China stand-offs in Ladakh in this interview to @manaman_chhina

indianexpress.com/article/india/… It is India's access to the Karakoram Pass that is threatened. The Pass itself is not disputed.

Eastern Ladakh. The Line of Actual Control with China runs along the range on the left. Picture by me. The skeleton of an animal, possibly of a Kiang, wild ass, in the Chushul Valley. July 2016. Chinese helicopters have flown close to the Line of Actual Control but not crossed it. We have deployed fighter aircraft to Ladakh: Aajtak TV channel reports quoting "top Indian government sources". Helicopters are a usual form of transport for the militaries of both india and China along the Himalayan frontier normally. They do not venture within a specified limit of the LAC as per mutual confidence building measures.

Despite the reservations on the efficacy of the "salute to coronawarriors", India is set to see a countrywide mobilisation of the armed forces tomorrow, Sunday, May 3, if only for a ceremonial. All three services plus the Coast Guard. The logistics are huge and intricate. The debate on whether it is worthwhile has been put aside.
