The thing about super toxic leadership like Elon’s is that even if the company is sold in six months, it will be very difficult to overcome the trauma he will have caused. He destroyed what I’ve heard was a pretty positive engineering culture within a week. 1/ The old saying about trust being easy to lose and hard to gain back is so true. And the effect of toxic environments isn’t just a breakdown of trust with management, it effects the trust employees have for each other too. 2/

Yesterday I was saying that I thought the chance of Twitter having a catastrophic failure was pretty small, that it would be more degraded service, outages, etc. Things are definitely degraded but things sound much worse than I thought yesterday. I have noticed an increase in errors in the client going back almost a week. It’s all anecdotal, I have no data, but I’m getting pretty frequent errors, “Tweets aren’t loading” and others. The system’s been degraded basically since the layoffs it feels like.

I do want to comment on this part of the apology specifically. The fact that there have been scams daily in crypto (see @web3isgreat) is no accident. He mentions governance and transparency but the absence of them is a feature, not a bug. I’ve mentioned before that I was on the Cypherpunks email list back in the 90s when people were first discussing anonymous digital currencies. The anonymity was a key part of the idea. These ideas were largely pushed (and still are) by libertarians.

Oh wow I am absolutely gutted by this. I’m still playing Gotham Knights regularly and every time Batman shows up I’m sad that Kevin didn’t voice it. The same for every animated DC movie that he’s not in. I honestly can’t think of another voice actor that I identify so much with a specific character that I love. Truly iconic.

This little clip definitely sums up my feelings on people turning dev/ops tools into religions. Back in the mid 90s when I started as a sysadmin, I was sticking Linux CDs into commodity PCs and building servers by hand. So many things have changed since then. You should expect that the way you’re doing things today isn’t what you’ll be doing in 5 or 10 years.

The timing of this is pretty amazing. I had a poll going about whether Elon is the worst CEO in history but I guess SBF was mad that he wasn’t getting his due. And wow

👀 “In order for Twitter to advance the core product, what is the core product made up of? It’s made of software. So unless we write great software, it’s difficult to make the product better.” - Elon Musk

I’ve mentioned that I like the CWs on Mastadon. To be clear this behavior is not what I was referring to and I think it’s really unacceptable. 1/ What I was talking about was me choosing to put CWs on things that I think not all of my audience would want to engage with. I’m mainly talking about things like posts about Premiere League soccer or 90s professional wrestling. 2/

He’s personally reviewing the list of WFH exceptions! lmao. I literally could not write a character this bad at leadership.

Last talk of the conference for me is @Divya_Mohan02, @SaiyamPathak, @kunalstwt and @coffeeartgirl talking about how to navigate the CNCF landscape. #KubeCon Cloud native as a paradigm involved because people wanted vendor agnostic infra, and a more declarative approach to deploying workloads. @Divya_Mohan02 #KubeCon

During my chat last night with @LukasGentele and @fabiankramm, Lukas mentioned what a risk it was for me to join @loft_sh when I did. At that time it was mainly Lukas and Fabian and our designer (who is really rad). My instinct at the time had actually been to join a very large company. I’d been at three early stage companies in a row and felt like I needed a break. I had never heard of Loft Labs and knew nothing about the founders.

I haven’t talked about this a ton but I worked in a shop that processed financial transactions from Point of Sale devices for 10 years. The idea of doing these things with immutable code and writing the results down on an immutable ledger has seemed totally nonsensical to me. A lot of the folks I’ve seen who are labeled as crypto skeptics are in similar situations. We’ve designed and operated systems for many years and understand a lot about how they fail. People exchanging money is a use case where failure is much less tolerable to most people.
