Somehow this escaped my attention. A month ago French grandmaster Joel Lautier was sanctioned by the U.S. for his work on Sovcombank's board. (home.treasury.gov/policy-issues/…)

Last night, a vandal at Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery used a metal pole to smash through the glass and damage Ilya Repin's famous painting of Ivan the Terrible killing his son in a fit of rage

The painting's history is incredible. Alexander III banned public displays for several months when it was first unveiled. It was also damaged in a knife attack in 1913. The gallery's keeper, Georgy Khruslov, threw himself under a train when he found out
