I was telling my Australian mate a few basic things about the Kiingitanga movement, and it occurred to me that maybe some New Zealanders would like some 101 level info as well. So if that is you, here goes. 🧵 1/9. The Kiingitanga movement was established in 1858 as a direct challenge to the colonial monarchy. It was started by Waikato-Tainui iwi, and aimed to unite Māori under a single sovereign. Not all iwi agreed, including major Māori iwi such as Tūhoe and Ngāpuhi. 2/9

Our media is breathlessly reporting that “research has found” every $1 invested in Gumboot Friday results in $5.70 of social return.
These downstream benefits are notoriously difficult to measure so I went digging to find who did the “research.” You’ll never guess… 🧵

FYI, you can’t just use blood straight off the street for a baby’s heart surgery 🤦🏻‍♀️ All blood products have to be filtered, and the filtration process doesn’t separate blood in this way. Is the whole NZ Blood service supposed to close down to cater to this request? 🧵 Secondly, plasma (a blood product) gets sent to Australia to be filtered. So if plasma is required the donor plasma would be sent to Australia and would also shut down their blood service so that this indistinguishable plasma could be kept separate/2.
