Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud tells me this morning outside Hanini Outreach and Community Center that voting uncommitted in the Michigan primary today isn’t an Arab or Muslim issue, “it’s an issue of morality.” Adam Abusalah, an activist with New Generation for Palestine explaining the push to use Michigan’s presidential primary to send a message to President Biden over his handling of the war in Gaza.

The state’s population council is meeting in Lansing right now: Proposed policy recommendations are supposed to be discussed. There have been 3,666 same day registrations across Michigan, MDOS says. Ann Arbor (321) and East Lansing (220) leading the way in that category. Same day registrations across the state now at 5,856, MDOS says. College campuses are driving that total with Ann Arbor at 466 and East Lansing at 368.

No major issues so far this Election Day ahead of 11am press call with state. Michigan Department of State spokesperson Jake Rollow told reporters this morning he had heard of a couple instances of e-poll books not working at precincts in Detroit. "If that occurs, precincts should use their paper backup and every precinct should have a paper backup with them of that voter registration list," Rollow said. It could take a bit longer to look somebody up on paper, but it won't impact the ability to vote in any way, he says.

Here at Pasteur Elementary School in Northwest Detroit where Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is casting her ballot and speaking to media. “We’re on track to have one of the highest turnout in midterm elections in our state,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson says. “There’s a lot of energy out there, a lot of pride.”

Tudor Dixon’s camp told me this week she would accept the results of the election “as long as the elections are run in a manner that follows the law.” When I asked what could happen from now to Election Day, the campaign cited Benson’s appeal of a Circuit Court ruling that invalidated previous guidance which R’s said restricted the rights of poll challengers. The Circuit Court ruling would’ve allowed challengers to use phones.

A paid circulator just approached me with several ballot initiatives outside of the Westnedge Ave Dollar Tree in Portage. “Excuse me sir, are you a registered voter in Michigan? We are gathering signatures to help special needs kids.” I declined, identified myself as a reporter. I asked him what petitions he had, and he showed me the Let MI Kids Learn petition, which would allow donors to get tax breaks on donations toward nonpublic education. I asked if was a paid circulator from Florida, he said yes.

Downtown Kalamazoo: First Congregational Church is hosting a vigil at Arcadia Creek Festival Place after rumours spread that the Proud Boys, a white nationalist group, were holding a rally. Right now, members of an anti-fascist group are the only ones here. Stay tuned. @MLive Community members are interacting with members of the anti-racist group; they don’t talk to media but did tell me some of them are Kalamazoo residents and some are from out of town. The group has an armed perimeter around the area.
