The network effect -- the viral force that gave Facebook its winner-takes-all power -- also works in the opposite direction. Because of this, Mark Zuckerberg has long worried about the day FB starts shrinking, sources tell me: bloomberg.com/news/newslette… The more people that join a network, the more valuable it becomes, and the less likely people are to join a rival.

But every person that leaves a network removes value and content from that network, and gives others less of a reason to stay.

Time for some personal news...
After YEARS covering social media companies, chronicling their transformation into giants, writing a book about Instagram, I’m moving on from the day-to-day beat and transitioning to a senior writing role, covering tech power more broadly. I’ll aim for high-impact stories, Businessweek long form, explanatory pieces, etc. Its going to be a big change and a challenge but I’m very excited to take it on!

Snap revenue is a big beat, at $454 M, lifted by ecommerce ads during the pandemic as people spend more time on phones.
but DAUs slightly miss estimates, because the company thought its stay-at-home phone-obsessed trend would be more significant than it ended up being. The company says revenue is up 32% so far this quarter compared to last year (way higher than expected) but says don't count on it lasting because so much is changing. Normal drivers of 3Q ads (movie releases! back to school! Sports!) are just not the same during a pandemic.

Earlier this summer I wrote a story about how Snapchat was going to be crucial for the youth vote because of coronavirus. And Trump's campaign was getting traction there, especially by making content that appeared frequently on the Discover page. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… The Trump campaign distributed the story widely, to show Trump was beating Biden on the digital stage.

Today, Snapchat said it's no longer promoting Trump's posts. "We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover."

Facebook is having a press call to discuss their response to COVID-19 right now. I'm on it, as is @KurtWagner8. Will let you know what we hear! Mark Zuckerberg sounds very solemn. He's speaking slowly.

Wow. Google announcing YouTube's annual ad revenue for the first time. YouTube ads generated $15 billion! That's close to 10 percent of Google's annual revenue, and about 20 percent of what Facebook made in 2019.

Facebook wants to slap its brand more prominently on Instagram and WhatsApp because most people don't know those are owned by Facebook, and “when they know, the overall appreciation for the Facebook family actually grows,” CMO tells @KurtWagner8 bloomberg.com/news/articles/… @KurtWagner8 He also says there's "no difference" in the brand perception of Instagram, and a slight "brand tax" in the perception of WhatsApp.

Facebook has been paying hundreds of human contractors to listen to audio clips from its users and transcribe them. New from me: bloomberg.com/news/articles/… Facebook confirms it has done this, but says it's not happening anymore: “Much like Apple and Google, we paused human review of audio more than a week ago.”

Instagram: "We don’t want Instagram to be such a competition." *tests removing likes*

Teens: *turn their profiles into "business" accounts for more detailed metrics, making their contact info public*

bloomberg.com/news/articles/… If you turn your account into a business account, you get detailed analytics about who is viewing your posts by time of day, gender, etc etc. Anyone can do it. The only cost is you have to make your email or phone # public. A data scientist found millions of teens are doing this.

Massive new report out today on Russian influence. Researchers commissioned by Senate Intelligence find an intricate, professional-level plan to embolden Trump voters and turn people off Clinton, by sharing deep within interest communities. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… “It appears that the platforms may have misrepresented or evaded in some of their statements to Congress,” one of the reports says bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

My sources say the Instagram founders are leaving after increased tension with Mark Zuckerberg over the direction of the product. IG culture/priorities very different from FB. See my April story for background: bloomberg.com/news/features/… Still no information at all from FB after @MikeIsaac scoop on their departure. The most likely new leader of Instagram is Adam Mosseri, who formerly ran news feed at Facebook.

Breaking: Apple quietly changed its rules to prohibit iPhone app developers from creating databases of people's contact information and sharing it with third parties bloomberg.com/news/articles/… w/ @markgurman Consumers might not fully understand what happens when they share contacts with a developer. I'm tuning into Facebook's annual shareholder meeting, which is being webcast here: investor.fb.com/investor-event… A fiery meeting so far. Someone already kicked out for interrupting. "Facebook’s poor stewardship of user data is tantamount to a human rights violation," one investor says. "Scandal is not good for the company's bottom line," another says.

Scoop: An internal white paper at Facebook shows in detail how Trump's campaign was better at leveraging Facebook's advertising tools than Clinton's campaign. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… Trump ran 5.9 million different versions of ads during the presidential campaign and rapidly tested them to spread those that generated the most Facebook engagement, according to the paper.
