This is not true. She filed the lawsuit before she made any wedding websites. She was not taken to court. She filed the lawsuit to get exempted from complying with a non discrimination law. But the religious right loves to have the image of the Christian proprietor being hauled into court for her beliefs. But it’s simply not true.

I finally read this piece today and it is so misinformed on facts, law, reality, history that I am shocked that it ran, even as "opinion." To wit: the opening anecdote suggests that her church or her kids' Christian school might lose their tax exempt status because of their stance opposing marriage equality. 2/x

I’d been on an airplane.

I just read the piece. I have some thoughts, which I will collect. So. I know Rob, and he has been a source on a few stories I’ve written.

I understand how shocking this particular story — along with a couple of others recently, in which he describes his efforts to shape how SCOTUS justices thought about and wrote decisions. 1/x

I just read the New York Times piece raising doubts about gender-affirming care (although the article doesn't call it that). This graf shows just how unaware the writers and editors are of the political/religious movement behind the effort to deny trans people their rights: (Here's the link to the full piece: nytimes.com/2022/11/14/hea…)

I read NYT story this morning and tried (unsuccessfully) to dissect the sourcing. This is illuminating (and infuriating that NYT elides or obscures this)

I haven’t even had a chance to listen to this yet, but I know these two brilliant women and their work and I can guarantee you it will be worth your time. Listening now. Thank you again @dianabutlerbass and @julieingersoll. Going to live-tweet some thoughts while I listen.

First up is a sociology-religious studies throwdown. Give it a listen, @CharlesMcCrary.

What Jeff is talking about here is big commitment in terms of both money but also to the craft and promotion of long-form investigative journalism. We complained in Jeff's thread about how hard it's been (especially pre-insurrection) to get support for in-depth, long-form investigative journalism about Christian nationalism/the Christian Right, etc. (see my backs and forths here w/ @JeffSharlet)

I have a new investigative piece out today, about a Christian nationalist boot camp that trains state legislators to enact "God-fearing" laws. One of its most celebrated alumna is behind one of the harshest anti-trans laws in the country. 1/x

The title of Lindsey Graham's abortion ban -- the "Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act" -- is a messaging mishmash, even as the overall message (ban all abortions) is evident from the circumstances. On the one hand, the term "late-term abortion," as opposed to the right-wing preferred "partial birth abortion," is an attempt to mainstream it. But 15 weeks isn't "late term" in any scenario.

This is a private Christian school, and there’s a very strong argument that this is the result not of DeSantis lead, but of the ever expanding religious exemptions to LGBTQ rights (aka a license to discriminate) carved out by SCOTUS and red state legislatures. Even Congress and fed govt allow such exemptions. Christian colleges and universities are allowed to expel LGBTQ students even though it is illegal under Title IX, as I reported here:

A short thread on what's happening to the Maryland GOP. 1/x

Last week, I wrote about the extremist candidates chosen by GOP primary voters to be their nominees for governor (Dan Cox) and attorney general (Michael Peroutka). The focus of my piece was how the big stolen election lie and white Christian nationalism have coalesced in these extremist candidates. For @newrepublic: 2/x

More than 80 religious right leaders call on Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to oppose the Respect for Marriage Act, claiming (not surprisingly) that it is an attack on religious freedom.

…medialegalfiles.blob.core.windows.net/files/McConnel… This has long been their claim about marriage equality-that LGBTQ equality spells suppression of religious freedom for conservative Christians. (Spoiler alert: it does not. Religious freedom for conservative Christians is being methodically expanded by the current Supreme Court).

Republican Jewish Coalition: "We strongly urge Doug Mastriano to end his association with Gab, a social network rightly seen by Jewish Americans as a cesspool of bigotry and antisemitism."

inquirer.com/politics/elect… We need to talk more about Mastriano's (and other Republicans') embrace of Gab's open anti-semitism twinned with their use of shofars at Christian nationalist events.
