Excellent thread here with a lot of great marketplace lessons.

A few comments: Suburbs were great for all these reasons, and of course the most important one: zero competition! It's a lot easier to be so much better than the competition when you basically have none.

One of the requests I got after I published the Hierarchy of Marketplaces (medium.com/@sarahtavel/th…) is to share the audio voiceover of the slides.

Here is the voiceover for Level 1 - lmk what you think about the format. If useful, I'll do Level 2 and 3. Intro

I just published the final installment of the Hierarchy of Marketplaces — Level 3 link.medium.com/9fplHqFJr7

If you've been biting at the bit to grow, this level is for you. It's time to dominate the landscape and competition. The core insight here is something I learned from @fabricegrinda while he was building OLX. That with marketplaces it's not enough to be #1. It's about being #1... by a lot!

The NAACP is particularly close to my heart: 2/ When I was young, my dad told me a story about my great uncle Kivie Kaplan. When Kivie was on his honeymoon in Florida, he was turned away at a country club – “No Jews, No Dogs”.

On my @AllRaise panel yesterday, one of the questions from the audience was where are the white spaces to build a consumer marketplace? @AllRaise What we forget is that both Uber and Airbnb actually beat out incumbents. Airbnb launched years after HomeAway (2005) and VRBO (1995!). Lyft was inspired by SideCar to launch Lyft Line, which inspired Uber to launch UberX.

Weekly, someone reaches out to me asking for career advice on the decision to go from being an operator to a VC. Thought I’d memorialize it here in case others are curious: It’s a big transition. I spent 6 years in VC before joining Pinterest, so when I left Pinterest to join Greylock, I thought it would be like getting back on a bike. Instead, it felt like getting a train back on the tracks one wheel at a time.
