Happy to share my latest piece for @NewStatesman which looks at the role of nuclear weapons in Russian doctrine and strategy and what this does (and does not) tell us about the risk of nuclear use in the war in Ukraine. A few points below👇: newstatesman.com/security/2022/… Putin has been engaged in nuclear saber rattling since the start of his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. This has sparked a lot of discussion within the nuclear community about whether he might make good on these threats and, if so, what this would look like. (2/)

@HannaNotte, @SokovNikolai, @PotterCNS, @DuitsyWasHere, and I wanted to understand what was driving post-Soviet Russian military innovation. So we took a deep dive into five novel Russian weapons systems—Avangard, Burevestnik, Poseidon, Kinzhal, and Tsirkon—for answers (1/7) The results are captured in our new article, "Russia’s novel weapons systems: military innovation in the post-Soviet period," which is out today in the @TheNonproReview (2/7) …nline-com.ezproxy-miis.middlebury.edu/doi/full/10.10…

Russia released its Basic Principles of State Policy in the field of Nuclear Deterrence yesterday (h/t @KomissarWhipla). There have been some great threads on this already (I mention some at the end), but here’s my $0.02 (1/n) publication.pravo.gov.ru/Document/View/… First, as someone who looks at US-Russia arms control and thinks about ways to get it back on track, I came to this document specifically looking for insights into Russia’s perceived threats and what it sees as likely pathways to nuclear use. For my non-Russian speakers, this video is an official announcement from the leadership of RFNC-VNIIEF regarding the Aug. 8 event at the MOD test site in the Arkhangel’sk oblast’. As we know, 5 people died. 3 have been hospitalized with moderately severe injuries. (1/10) The three people speaking are Valentin Kostiukov, director of RFNC-VNIIEF; Aleksandr Chernyshev, deputy scientific director of RFNC-VNIIEF and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences; and Vyacheslav Solov’ev, scientific director of RFNC-VNIIEF.
