Means testing is bullshit and presupposes inherent dishonesty in everyone. Because of that people who actually need it don't get it.

Take SNAP benefits. require <= 130% of the poverty line. For a family of three that's $1,830 a month.

What if I make $2000? I'm shit outta luck. It's not about rich or poor. It's about getting everyone what they need.

Will there be fraud? Yes. Will some of the rich try to fuck people over? Absolutely.

But will people who need help get it? With means testing, enh, maybe not.

No matter how fucked up you think it might have been, nope. It was so pervasive that a lot of people didn't even notice it.

Being against racism was a huge deal. And that was a lot more mainstream than dealing with queer folks.

We can't go back to this. Here's some of the batshit crazy of the 1980s that can totally and I guarantee to some extent will come back.

Let's start with Satan.

You know that Chick tract everybody makes fun of about D&D and demons?

PEOPLE BELIEVED THAT SHIT. I AM SERIOUS.

Speaking of which, who wants a long ass thread on ghosts, parapsychology, and whatnot?

Nobody? WELL, you're gonna get it, anyway.

Seriously, mute me for the next half hour or so if you don't want your feed clogged up. I'ma gonna talk about ghosts. Not ghosts in the Eric Carter world. Real life ones. See, waaaaaay back, I legit wanted to get into parapsychology.

It'll be interesting to see what our social landscape looks like once we hit the far side of the epidemic curve.

Sweeping social change often only happens as a reaction by those in power who are directly affected by a world changing event. The New Deal was a reaction to the entire country, including affluent whites, being hit by a major economic depression.

Now compare that to the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. No, it wasn't as large in scope, which is kind of my point. It was disproportionately hitting gay men.

Let me get this straight. In Fate of Cthulhu we specifically pointed out the racism of HP Lovecraft because well, he was a racist motherfucker, and we couldn’t in good conscience ignore that. I don’t know about you but if I’m tying my name to a racist motherfucker, I kind of want to make sure people understand why.

Racist motherfucker or not he sparked a world that has endured and grown by a lot of much better authors.

There's a bunch of floating around about how 29-year-olds should have X dollars saved. It pissed me of. It pissed me of a lot. And thanks to my good friend insomnia I finally figured out why. There's an inherent assumption in that attitude that says "Follow the rules and work hard and you will be rewarded."

Am ideas that America is built on. And it's all bullshit. Because with it comes the inverse idea.

"Don't follow the rules and work hard and you will be punished"
