I’ve literally wanted to dye my hair pink for a decade but fears about being taken seriously as a CS academic kept me from doing it. So, this is my gift to myself for getting 3 papers into SOSP this year. 🤘🏼

Have been spending a lot of time thinking about what it’s like being a woman in tech and sexism, and thought of this simple analogy based on an episode of my favorite TV show, Better Off Ted. (1/n) Imagine there is automatic sliding glass door to your office building that you have to go through every day. It’s been there since you started but seems a little broken. 99% of the time, it opens but 1% of the time, it just doesn’t open and you walk straight into the glass. (2/n)

Coincidentally, last week was also our annual review period at @MSFTResearch, so I committed to enacting concrete change against sexual harassment and sexism in the systems and broader CS community as my D&I goal for the year. Microsoft has recently made reaching D&I goals is a big factor in my bonus, so I’m literally putting my money where my mouth is. Let me know if you have suggestions for what I should do.
