let me tell a story about how white ppl like this do harm

i’m talking at a conference, and another speaker gives a talk about this very topic: “converting” kkk members, as done by a previous kkk member

it involves lots of video. LOTS. it completely takes me by suprise. i am not prepared or warned about this, on a day i’m giving a talk. i am one of few black ppl in the room. i’m hearing toxic racist shit in a very unsafe space, while a group of white ppl watch enraptured

needless to say, i feel fear

a tldr thought on tech-based research ops, from someone that was a capital R researcher: you dont separate research from ips. When you are a babby research assistant, the FIRST thing you learn is how to do the research. the tech setup, the logistics, the recruiting, all of it AS you do that, you then also learn your domain and how to think of and conceive of research, develop specialities, etc. but it goes hand in hand. to be a researcher is to be a planner/ops person. or to be an asshole that relies way too much on your assistants and admin staff
