I want to share some tips for people who want to make their tweets more plain language.
There’s a lot that goes into making something true plain language, and I won’t cover all that today, but I will share some small things you can do which can really help with access (1/8) You can read my recent thread to learn why plain language is important. Plain language helps people who have trouble understanding or reading complex language, like people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, people with dyslexia, or people learning a language (2/8)

I would love for people to stop framing requests for plain language as a personal criticism or a burden.

There is a difference between “You write way too academically,” and “I’m having trouble understanding this, could you please put it into less academic language?” (1/5) Plain language is often a disability accommodation. I am developmentally disabled, I have difficulty with reading and with understanding abstract concepts. I want to be able to access the same information as everyone else, but sometimes need help doing so. (2/5)

My waiver is covering movers for us, which is great, but unfortunately this is a moving agency specifically contracted to work with people on disability waivers, which means that they function about the same as any other disability agency (i.e. terribly) I have been texting with this person from the moving company, who only ever responds after 9pm. He tells me that he’s going to come out and see how much stuff we have to give a time estimate. It’s now 9:45, and he says, “I’ll come out tomorrow.”
