MY LATEST in my series on why age verification legislation can't work:

Age-verification laws don’t exempt VPN traffic. But that traffic can’t always be detected.

It's an *impossible* task once you consider VPNs.
Wrote this one with @RSI @CanyonBrimhall!rstreet.org/commentary/age… One issue that has not been examined closely yet is how these laws would impact virtual private networks (VPNs). We interviewed various stakeholders around VPNs including VPN blockers, a cybersecurity scholar and a partner at a digital media firm

I'm genuinely furious. Open AI is at the top now. I love their tech. Now they're lobbying for licensing which will effectively halt new innovation except from... them. Or other top firms. This is atrocious, blatant rent seeking. I study licensing and I work on tech policy /1 And this is a horrible marriage of the worst of both. Licensing is a massive barrier to entry that stops new entrants. Sam knows this. He knows EXACTLY what he's saying.

This is fucking asinine and all this will do will limit ... tech development to the wealthy. This is a terrible idea, it's protectionist, and it's worth condemnation "closed AI"

This is a REALLY good article on a subject I'm really interested in: Trying to find the line between agreeing to govt demands/censorship and allowing people of a country more freedom through tech. There IS a line and some give is worth it, but where and how much is hard to say /1 Like this statement from the Midjourney CEO nails that he's thinking about it (even if he gets it wrong)

“Political satire in china is pretty not-okay... the ability for people in China to use this tech is more important than your ability to generate satire.”

REALLY? Citing INDIA? They're taking oppressive control of the internet. wired.com/story/indias-g… Whoever tweeted this is clearly not aware of the oppression happening "The documentary examines Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alleged role in deadly riots in the West Indian state of Gujarat in 2002, and the government has worked hard to keep Indians from watching it."

"The reality, however, is more nuanced than the governor would have us believe, according to @SarahMCoyne1, a professor of human development and researcher in the field of media impacts on children." @SarahMCoyne1 “The findings you’re hearing in news media are pretty overblown, whereas most of us who actually study this recognize it’s incredibly complex and the research just isn’t there that [social media] causes this,” she told me recently."

NEW: Who Is Licensed in a
Pineapple Under the Sea?

In my new paper, I catalogue every license and certification in Bikini Bottom and come up with room for reform. I want to thank @DougDucey for writing the foreword here
rstreet.org/research/who-i… @DougDucey “For far too long, King Neptune has governed with an overly bureaucratic approach stunting innovation and economic growth, which is no surprise coming from an absolute monarch”

This gave me a mini heart episode but I read it and it looks pretty sensible, not 230-ish, focused more on understanding the problem "The strategy required under subsection (a) shall not include legislative recommendations or elements predicated on the passage of legislation that is not enacted as of the date on which the strategy is submitted under subsection (a)" incl w encryption policies or reforms to 230

"I will defend the Bill of Rights against all comers, even, if need be, from members of my own party."

@RandPaul gets into First Amendment implications of banning TikTok. And while you might argue it doesn't matter with national security concerns...

courier-journal.com/story/opinion/… @RandPaul A few things.
1) Nat sec concerns don't eliminate 1A concerns. They have to be weighed and considered.
2) The proposed legislation to ban TikTik goes WAY beyond what would be necessary and gives MASSIVE new powers to ban speech under the guise of "national security"

Permission-Slip Culture Is Hurting America

Why should anyone need a license to braid hair? theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… @JerusalemDemsas @JerusalemDemsas "Maine requires $235 and 1,095 days to become a travel guide. Want to move states? That could mean you have to relicense, as if, say, cutting hair is materially different in Massachusetts than it is in New York." @TheAtlantic

So 1) It's a Texas bill and isn't statutorily limited to Texans which is... not how laws work

2) It "would create requirements that are functionally impossible to comply with and would drastically diminish the usability of many internet services for all users, not just children" @JGWithrow
"The content that may be considered harmful to any given child’s mental or emotional well-being is inherently subjective, leaving it to individual judges to define the law’s scope in practice."

*HAPPY SHOSHANA NOISES* while licensing reform is bipartisan, it tends to be more one side or the other side. This is a huge accomplishment in a purple state, and it's SO EXCITING to see @GovernorVA championing this, This will make VA the 20th state to do this @GovernorVA @ne0liberal ideas FTW

To the tweeter who tole me to try serrapeptase Oh my lordddd thank you!!!! Its big thing is reducing inflammation and a lot of autoimmune-tastic people like me swear by it. But more than anything it's just giving me SO MUCH energy
amzn.to/3HxsOL7 I'm waiting to see how it works with inflammation specifically, but it's interesting that - if it's right - it's already stopping some of that which apparently was draining my energy? Now all the good things I do for my body can just... work!

This still has me furious. Filing false police reports is against the law. Hertz did it thousands of times as a part of doing business. Lack of action against Hertz is evil As many remember, Avis pulled a lesser version of the same shit on me, stealing $2-3000 fro a car I returned. Apparently Hertz would file a false report, Avis would just steal your $. But in both cases, these actions are illegal and I'm horrified that nothing has been done.
