Converting meat byproducts into bad tweets
May 20 4 tweets 1 min read
Nobody's going to ban meat, but a lot of people want to pass animal welfare laws that make it progressively more expensive until it becomes unprofitable or outright unaffordable to sell it. The pathway is lab grown chicken -> no battery cages, or even stricter rules than that. Meanwhile, if enough states pass laws banning lab grown meat, the available market shrinks and the R&D and other fixed costs required to bring it to market don't pencil. It's a brutally logical policy to try to prevent something that has happened over and over in the past.

Here's the thing, yes, people will be sad when you upzone their neighborhoods just like people were sad when their dumb uncompetitive toaster factories closed but it still needs to be done. And it doesn't actually need to be done to very many neighborhoods. After a fashion the diffuse gains to the whole population do matter, as the Biden administration discovered to its woe after it generated inflation trying to buy votes with industrial policy, student loan forgiveness, etc.

Voters WILL support you if you produce enough growth.

2019-2024 is nearly the only interval over which male prime-age employment to population ratio is up. It has been declining for 60 years and it would be a major policy victory to pull those men back into the workforce. That is what Vance is talking about. Image Labor force participation rate for men has a similar pattern and has not returned to its pre-pandemic level (although this is partly the result of population aging). Image

Longshoremen in this country basically have government-granted hereditary fiefs for fake jobs that pay $200k+/year which they pass down to their kids by submitting fraudulent timesheets so the kids get union seniority The reason to automate ports is not because it is cheaper or more efficient per se but because the members of the ILA and ILWU are atrocious people

There's an episode of South Park where Kyle signs the iTunes EULA without reading, allowing Steve Jobs to conduct medical experiments on him. And all his friends are like "of course we all read the EULA before signing it!" and he's bewildered

This is how I feel about 1/6. By which I mean, like, obviously sacking the Capitol to overturn the results of an election that you lost is the single worst way to abuse the power of the presidency, right? But it feels like nobody else believes this, not even the dems, even though they won't shut up about it

On Feb. 16, Stephen Miller pointed out that Americans don't actually care about Ukraine so why are we making it a focus. 8 days later it was all anyone was talking about.
On Feb 21, Stephen Miller complained that we were destroying American credibility by making promises of deterrence we would never follow up on. We followed up on them 3 days later.
