🚨 Rent is Due Today 🚨
The foreign aid pause doesn’t just harm wartime allies still waiting for safety—it threatens the future of refugees and allies who have recently arrived.

Let’s talk about what happens when resettlement funding dries up in another #AfghanEvac 🧵 Image Resettlement agencies rely on federal funds to help newly arrived allies find housing, jobs, & access basic services.
A pause means these programs stop functioning, leaving families stranded without support.

This waiver from @secrubio does not allow for Afghan relocation operations to resume for a few reasons, which I will detail below. 🧵 Image First — It strictly limits Migration and Refugee Assistance (MRA) funds to “core life-saving medicine, medical services, food, shelter, and subsistence assistance” and repatriation to a third country—not relocation to the U.S.

Afghans who worked alongside the U.S. and are now persecuted cannot access safety if pathways are closed, suspended, or defunded.

We must act to protect those who risked everything for our shared values.

Here’s how we can restore relocation for Afghans. 🧵👇 #AfghanEvac Image First, we need to allow Afghans to be processed through all refugee referral mechanisms:
•P-1 and P-2 referrals
•P-3 family reunification
•P-4 private sponsorship
These pathways are already outlined in Section 3(b) of the Executive Order on U.S. Refugee Admissions.

🚨BREAKING: @POTUS new executive order on #ForeignAid appears to have paused all Afghan relocation and resettlement programs, INCLUDING #SIV, we hope unintentionally.
Here's what we know so far, and what we're doing about it. 🧵 whitehouse.gov/presidential-a…Image At the end of the day today, a Friday, @stateprm notified resettlement agencies and other grant recipients that their funding had been suspended.

Here is the email and below I'll lay out what it means. Image

I’m here with an #AfghanEvac 🧵containing some facts about #wartimeallies.

First: the term “wartime allies” refers to both #SIVs and Refugees.

IMPORTANT: SIVs are not impacted by the refugee executive order, may be impacted by others. Refugees are impacted. Special Immigrant Visa (#SIV) applicants and recipients who worked directly with U.S. forces in roles such as interpreters and advisors.

It has been a chaotic and insane few days, quite similar to what it felt like during August 2021, so I wanted to put together a 🧵 with everything we know about the #USRAP Executive Order that @realdonaldtrump signed. #AfghanEvac

Here we go. Image Here is the direct text. As you can see it was SUPPOSED to take effect on Jan 27, 2025. It seems like they decided to move on it early. I have NEVER seen the Federal government accomplish a task early.

The U.S. made a promise to Afghans who stood by us during decades of war.
As @realDonaldTrump, @JDVance, and @michaelgwaltz face day 1 decisions about continuing #Afghan relocations, the consequences of inaction are dire.
I'm going to break this down on behalf of #AfghanEvac. 🧵 We’ve already sent a letter to them and to Congressional leadership outlining these concerns and urging both action and nuance.

You can find the letter live at .

Here’s why this issue cannot wait:afghanevac.org/transition-let…

🧵 @AfghanEvac has built lasting and meaningful relationships with the @WhiteHouse, @StateDept, and more.

This thread will explain what we talked about & how we’ve built those relationships over the last three years, all in service to helping our Afghan allies and friends. First, just let me say that it was an honor to be asked to host this meeting from the Roosevelt room.

As I said during our call, that sends a message to Afghans, to our team, and to the world.

The work we are doing matters.

It IS a priority for the U.S. government.

For #Afghans awaiting SIV and worried about the program.

There are a lot of questions about what it means if @SpeakerJohnson continues to block inclusion of SIV numbers, so I’m gonna do this 🧵 to explain the facts.

reuters.com/world/us/speci… Right now, there are about 7000 SIV numbers left below the 38,500 cap.

@StateDept is using about 1000 a month and the pace is increasing steadily, thanks in no small part to the collaboration between @AfghanEvac and the State team.

I’m an @iaem Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) and have worked hurricanes (Sandy and Irene).

Rule number 1 for San Diego politicians: please do not show up at EOCs this weekend / Monday. If they need you, they’ll call you.

🧵 on more tips below: Do not minimize the seriousness of this storm. Better to over prepare.

✨ Fill a bath tub with water
✨ Make sure you have plenty of non-perishable food, medicine, bottled water, baby food, and any other necessities
✨ Fill up your gas tanks
✨ Secure your patio furniture

🧵 Leaving Washington after a fruitful week meeting with Afghans, @afghanevac team members, and government leaders from @StateDept, @WhiteHouse, @WHNSC, @DeptofDefense, @DeptVetAffairs, and @DHSgov. Image We heard several positive updates from our colleagues in government regarding #EHC / TWC, process improvements at various points in the SIV and P1/P2 pipelines, and other good news.

We also heard some disappointing things we are still working through.

We will keep pushing.

Took some time off work and I'm on an plane, heading back to Washington, DC for another week focused on #AfghanEvac so I wanted to provide an update.

As always, you can find resources and more information at afghanevac.org #AfghanEvac logo First: to our friends in #Afghanistan and their families here in the US and around the world: we see you, we hear you, and we will not forget the sacrifices you've made in our name. An update on #afghanistan:

The #AfghanEvac coalition and other groups have not forgotten the American citizens, legal permanent residents, visa holders, and other Afghan allies who are still in Afghanistan. We are continuing to work to find ways for you to leave the country. The communities are coordinating with the US government and working toward safe and predictable relocation opportunities for those eligible.

If you and your family are currently in a safe location, please stay there for now.
