Looking at the documents brought to light by Haugen, and reading through hundreds of different memos, presentations, and reports, my big take away, (so far), is that Facebook’s research into the harms on its platform is impressive. But why isn’t it changing FB’s policies? In our story, @RMac18 and I report how researchers at FB were documenting the spike in misinformation and hate speech before Jan. Facebook’s enforcement of groups like Stop the Steal “was piecemeal.”nytimes.com/2021/10/22/tec…

Lately, I've had a some mom friends congratulate me on 1)writing a book 2)while at the NYT 3)with small children 4)during a pandemic. The tone was always, "Wow, you must be superhuman." And my answer was always, "Nope, I just cried a lot and neglected other things in my life." I thought about this today when I was reading the Primal Scream package put together by my colleagues. Here’s a story about what it took for me to appear on MSNBC this morning for five minutes to talk about my front-page story in the NYT. Or: Why it is so hard for working moms to have it all. (Thread) I woke up at 5AM to my 1-year-old melting down in her crib. When I got up to put her back to sleep, I saw 6 missed calls on my phone. A few TV networks were asking if I could come on air. Happenstance #1 - Had the kiddo not woken up, I would have never see these messages in time.
